With a focus on current migration patterns in sub-Saharan Africa, this course dismantles key misconceptions by asking what (im)mobility means in various regional and social contexts. Discussions include perspectives of ordinary citizens, the attempts by national governments and regional organizations to manage mobility and to maximise the value of migration for development, as well as the ways in which the topic is politicized both within and beyond the continent. Participants are introduced to key issues and current debates on migration, and engage with case studies from Eastern, Southern and Western Africa.
